Edinburgh International Book Festival

The largest festival of its kind in the world.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival is the world’s biggest and best-respected public celebration of the written word. Founded in 1983, the Book Festival takes place every August in Charlotte Square Gardens, in the heart of the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. In 2014 over 220,000 people attended almost 800 events, featuring authors from 45 different countries.

Each year the festival presents new writing and refreshing ideas, using books as a lens through which to consider the world in the 21stcentury. Scottish literature, history and identity form an integral part of the programme with over 200 Scottish authors participating. Alongside the events for adults there are programmes for children, young adults and schools. The Book Festival also collaborates with other organisations to present public events across Scotland.
