SUMMARY:Creating AI Policies for literature organisations
DESCRIPTION:As one of the most significant shifts in the literature sector in the past few years\, developing an approach to AI\, whether a more informal in-house statement\, or a public-facing policy\, is something organisations are increasingly reckoning with. \nIn this practical\, interactive 60 minute online session for LAS Members\, Sheila Pinder (CEO) and Abigail McDougall (Head of Policy and Communications) of Publishing Scotland will present a case-study of their values-led approach to creating an AI Policy\, including discussing the nuances of doing so when representing a broader group of parties\, many of whom will have conflicting viewpoints on the field. \nThis will be followed by a Q&A\, and a chance for you to discuss priorities and concerns in your organisation’s AI guidelines\, statements and policies. This event will be chaired by LAS Trustee\, Kirsten Macquarrie. \nRegistration is open to LAS Member organisations only. You are encouraged to submit question or highlight areas of particular interest in advance. \nIf you work freelance in the literature sector in Scotland and feel you would benefit from attending this session\, please get in touch to request a space. \nThis session will take place on Zoom\, with auto captions. Please let us know if there are any adjustments we can make to support you to engage. \nWith the pace and change of digital technologies an ever present challenge and opportunity over the past decade already\, the recent wide adoption and availability of generative AI has disrupted cultural policy and raised significant questions around workforce sustainability\, ethical use and the value of human creativity\, insight and oversight in the literary ecology sector as well as the broader Arts and Culture sector. \nIn this turbulent and shifting landscape\, literature organisations are seeing an increased need to develop clear\, consistent and transparent positions about their internal use of AI and the ways in which those they work with or support use AI – both in operational and creative processes.  \nAt what point do we need to develop statements for individual programmes\, guidelines for internal and external use\, and when do we hit the point at which we need an AI Policy as an organisation. Once we hit that point\, how do we ensure we are taking an appropriate level of consultation with all our stakeholders into consideration — and how do we develop Guidelines or Policies around AI that are able to incorporate rapid and unanticipated developments? \nAbout our speakers:\nSheila Pinder: CEO\, Publishing Scotland\nSheila began her book industry career at B.T. Batsford\, followed by a decade in the editorial design & production business Chapman Bounford & Associates\, producing work for publishers including HarperCollins\, The United Nations Environment Programme\, Octopus\, Osprey and DK. At the IPG\, she organised the annual conference and led the emergence of the organisation as one of the UK’s most influential publishing voices. \nDuring her seven years at NBN International\, she was instrumental in the rebirth of the distribution company under its ownership by the US-based Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group. Her subsequent consulting and mentoring practice saw her working with many well-known independent publishers\, often on M&As or supply chain projects. \nAfter a short period as Interim MD at Inpress\, she worked as a secondary school English teacher\, including two years with the Teach First Leadership Development Programme in a school in central Peterborough. Following her return to the book industry\, her work portfolio includes supporting publisher partnerships with system provider\, Stison. Since 2022 she has worked with academic publisher Agenda in Newcastle upon Tyne on business development\, and she also currently chairs the advisory board at Birmingham-based Nine Arches Press. \nAbigail McDougall: Head of Policy and Communications\, Publishing Scotland\nAbigail monitors policy and regulatory shifts\, identifying risks and opportunities and interpreting complex issues to provide strategic and practical support to members. She is responsible for Publishing Scotland’s media relations and public affairs activities\, working in consultation with members and other sectoral organisations to inform priorities for engagement. \nIn her earlier capacity at Publishing Scotland\, Abigail developed new programmes to help publishers navigate major changes shaping the industry: environmental sustainability\, Artificial Intelligence\, regulatory changes in key markets\, and the drive to embed equality\, diversity and inclusion in publishing. She retains oversight of Publishing Scotland’s training programme. \nPreviously\, Abigail led the Communications and Alumni Relations team at The Mandela Rhodes Foundation\, Nelson Mandela’s official legacy organisation for leadership development. A writer and editor of non-fiction\, she began her career as a journalist. She holds an MA in Creative and Media Enterprise from Warwick University and postgraduate qualifications in Sustainable Development and Politics and International Studies. She is a Chevening Scholar and a Mandela Rhodes Scholar.

SUMMARY:Push the Boat Out
DESCRIPTION:An event unlike any other\, Push The Boat Out remains Scotland’s newest poetry and multi arts festival\, with a growing year round programme and a strong community ethos. \nWe are inspired by the vibrancy and range of contemporary poetry\, hip hop\, and spoken word from Scotland\, the UK\, and further afield. We give poetry a new platform by creating an environment where all variations of this vital art form are encouraged to grow\, evolve and even collide as we bend boundaries across artistic forms. We explore fresh\, inventive ways to bring poetry and audiences together by challenging perceptions of what poetry is\, how and where it can be enjoyed and who it is for. \nYear-round\, we run regular online writing workshops with internationally acclaimed poets and special guests from around the world. while Rock the Boat\, our hugely popular open-mic night\, takes place monthly.

SUMMARY:Radical Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:With this year’s theme\, we want to shine a bright light on the many spaces\, people and movements where the beginnings of a different world already exist\, those pockets of reality where glorious alternatives to late capitalism and despair are carved out moment by moment. \nAs we spend our days and lives longing for a world that isn’t framed by oppression\, sometimes we’re lucky enough to get a whiff of something different: a campaign\, an organising space\, a community of support. In those glimpses\, we recognise what might be possible on a larger scale. It’s vital that we direct energy and resources to the breathing\, flawed and sprawling experiments in liberation we see around us – be they small or large. \nThese are seeds for the world we want. \nLike previous years\, the fair will be made up of book stalls\, activist stalls\, events\, workshops and more\, ranging from topics such as the cost of living crisis\, effective activism\, queer ecology\, lives in protest and prison\, feminist utopias\, fighting the rise of the right and much more. There will also be plenty of joy-giving performances and word-smithery and a community meal!
