Professional development and community for the literature sector in Scotland

LAS Lifetime Contribution Award

The LAS Lifetime Contribution Award celebrates the significant, sustained impact of individual literature professionals in Scotland.

The activity and strengths of the literature sector in Scotland today are due to the foundation stones laid down over many years by individuals who had the vision, commitment and personal qualities to bring people together, build something extraordinary and stay curious about how to do things differently in the future.

The LAS Lifetime Contribution Award is an opportunity for our community to celebrate the significant impact individuals have had in shaping our sector by providing the scaffolding by which other writers, readers and literary scholars can develop, collaborate and soar.

We will be accepting nominations for the 2027 Award until Wednesday 18 November 2026, through this short, online form.

Eligibility

The nominee should be:

  • Resident in Scotland
  • Have made a sustained, impactful contribution to the literature sector in Scotland through their work as a literature professional

We do not accept posthumous nominations, nominations of individuals whose significant contribution to literature is as a writer only, or nominations of individuals not currently resident in Scotland.

All eligible nominations will be considered in confidence by the current LAS Board. The inaugural award will be presented at the LAS Sector Day in February 2027.

FAQs

What is a ‘literature professional’?

For the purposes of this award, we consider a ‘literature professional’ to be someone working in or across the literary ecosystem in Scotland in a leadership, management, advocacy or administrative capacity. This might include someone who works as a festival director, a programmer, a producer, a consultant, or in other aspects of the book trade, literary services, publishing, libraries, literary journalism, policy or management. Many people working in literature have portfolio careers and also contribute as writers, artists, storytellers and through other forms of creative practice. This award is not intended to celebrate the impact of specific books or profile as a writer. If a nomination is solely based on an individual’s contribution to the sector as a creative practitioner then it would not be considered eligible.

What counts as a major contribution?

Rather than celebrating a single, impactful moment we are looking for nominations which celebrate an individual’s contribution to the sector across their career. We are looking to celebrate nominees who have made a sustained, substantial contribution, usually in a role equivalent to senior management. This might include having founded impactful programmes, organisations or other activity; taking existing activity in exciting new directions or connecting with under-served audiences; providing exceptional leadership in challenging circumstances; establishing and seeing through a bold new vision that sets an example for the rest of the sector to follow.

What happens if my nominee is not selected this year?

Nominations will be retained for continued consideration for the following 5 years.

How many people can I nominate each year?

You may make one nomination each year. There is the option to nominate as a duo or group if you feel this more accurately reflects the impact of the contribution you wish to celebrate.

Can I nominate a writer?

The LAS Lifetime Contribution Award is not designed to celebrate the achievements of individual books, writers or other creative practitioners. You may nominate an individual who is also a writer or known for their creative practice as part of a portfolio career, but if a nomination is solely based on an individual’s contribution to the sector as a creative practitioner then it would not be considered eligible.

Can I nominate someone posthumously?

We only accept nominations of individuals who are still with us

Can I nominate someone who doesn’t live in Scotland?

We only accept nominations of individuals who are currently resident in Scotland

Can I nominate myself?

If you meet the eligibility criteria then yes – we welcome self-nominations.

Who can nominate?

We welcome nominations from anyone currently working in or connected to the literature sector in Scotland
